‘Building bridges’: Polyglot, diplomat Pope Leo XIV speaks language of majority of world’s Catholics

Pope Francis appointed Robert Prevost in 2023 to lead the Vatican office that vets bishop nominations—one of the Church’s most powerful roles. And now, Prevost, 69, has become Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff. A Chicago native and Peruvian citizen, Prevost lived in Peru for many years, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop. In his first address, he spoke in Italian and Spanish as he greeted the crowd in Saint Peter’s Square. He had prominence going into the conclave that few other cardinals have.
