For 13 years, between 2004 and 2017, Mark Clatenberg has been a referee at the top level, whistling in hundreds of Premier League matches, passing through, among other things, difficult times.
At the worst of which he mentioned in an interview, revealing that he had come to think about suicide!
The former KED archive referred to the charges against Chelsea’s racism with Manchester United in 2012, when the Londoners had complained to the League that the British referee had made racist comments against two players.
“This case influenced me and my family. I think it was the closest to suicide. If I didn’t get a tip and couldn’t whistle anymore, what could I do?
I remember on my cellphone, all receiving the alerts that Mark Clatenberg is accused of racism against two players. And I had a newborn child, just six months old. It was the worst twelve hours of my life. I remember I couldn’t sleep. I was looking for my soul because I didn’t know what I had said, I was trying to figure out if I had said something about the intensity of the moment. That was the hardest, to think I may have done it.
Time began to pass and Chelsea could not find evidence. Knowing that you are innocent but your career may be destroyed is scary, “he said specifically, with the Londoners then apologizing for how they managed the situation.
