Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and President Christodoulides do not really want to open crossing points, the former Turkish leader said.
The two sides are not serious in their approaches to the Cyprus issue, said former Turkish leader Mehmet Ali Talat, saying that Ersin Tatar’s positions are completely opposed to UN SA resolutions.
According to the GMP, the press reported today in an interview with Mr Talat on an online broadcast. The former leader of the Turkish Cypriots said that “neither the Turkish side is serious, nor the Turkish side. I don’t want to say anything about the Turkish Republic and Greece, but the Cyprus issue is not the most urgent issue for Turkey and Greece. But everyone knows that the Cyprus issue is very important for the Turkish Cypriot side. That is why our isolation continues. If you look at the statements made after the Geneva Summit, we see that the issue is not taken seriously, “he said.
According to Mr. Talat, the Turkish side is hiding behind the position of recognizing two separate states of Mr Tatar, his policies, “which are completely opposed to the Security Council resolutions. He tries and manages to explain this to the world. Most politicians do not remember that the Turkish Cypriots said yes to the Annan plan, but the Greek Cypriots said no. Christodoulides appears a fan of the solution hidden behind Tatar. And the Turkish side behaves in exactly the opposite way. He says there is no common ground and screams joy for UN Secretary General Guterres’ statement that ‘there is no common ground’, “he noted.
Referring to the opening of crossing points, Mehmet Ali Talat said there should be no question of discussion. “When you want to open a border gate, you open it as a Turkish side and the Turkish side cannot say no to it, because the Turkish side claims that Cyprus has been distributed in two and the reason for the separation is the T/K and the EU supports the opening of border gates,” he said.
He said that the zodiac barricade was opened during his own “term” and did not get any permission to do so.
He argued that the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and President Christodoulides do not really want to open passage points while presenting that they want, and that they are blocking the opening by setting various conditions.
Noting that it was agreed to open four passing points, Mr Talat said that no statement was made to which points would be and no one asked what four points would open. He will ask himself about this Tatar, he concluded.
