His succession plans are expected to be revealed by Dalai Lama at a three -day Buddhist gathering this week ahead of his 90th birthday, with Beijing, however, appearing to have another attitude.
The 14th Dalai Lama will be 90 years old on Sunday (6/7) and said he would consult senior monks to share possible evidence of where his successor could be found after his death.
The Supreme Spiritual Leader will attend prayers convened by the exiled Tibetan government on July 5 and participate in his birthday celebrations a day later, according to the program shared by the organizers and broadcasting Reuters.
“I will dedicate the rest of my life to the benefit of others as much as possible,” Dalai Lama said at a gathering of the faithful on Monday (30/6), as they offered prayers for his longevity.
“There will be some kind of framework in which we will talk about the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution,” he said, according to Reuters.
Beijing’s attitude
He has stated in the past that he could potentially reincarnate in India, where he lives in exile near the city of Daramasala in the Himalayas. It is recalled that he was recognized as a reincarnation of his predecessor when he was two years old, but left Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against China, with Beijing considering him an autonomist and the same line is expected to adopt for his successor.
However, Dalai Lama has stated that his successor will be born outside China and has urged the faithful to reject anyone who chooses Beijing.
The Deputy President of the exiled Tibetan Parliament in Damamsala, Dolma Ch, he said, it is important for the people to hear directly from the Dalai Lama what he has to say, because China “is trying to slander him”.
“China is trying to grab this institution … serving its own political expediency,” she said.
“We want to give birth to the incarnation of the Dalai Lama not only for Tibet’s survival as a separate culture, religion and nation, but also for the prosperity of all humanity,” he added.
