The link between DIKO and EDEK is MP Panikos Leonidou, who had at least three contacts with Marinos Sizopoulos
Alarm seems to be set for the intermediate parties the risk of electoral shrinkage, as it was as stated in the 2024 European elections and in the latest polls. The rise of ELAM and the massive shift of voters to anti-registrar choices, coupled with a possible descent of the former Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides, in the 2026 parliamentary elections, create a fluid political scene that threatens with the disappearance.
The idea for a joint ballot paper of the intermediate parties has already been put into the public debate by DIKO’s parliamentary spokesman Panikos Leonidou and some steps have been taken in this direction. The Political and Articles of Association of DIKO last month announced the accession of Eleni Theocharous’s “Solidarity” party, while former EDEK MP George Varnava was also at the conference.
DIKO-EDEK contacts
Pa’s information says that a non -institutional political dialogue between DIKO and EDEK began to cooperate in the parliamentary elections. The link between the two parties is DIKO MP Panikos Leonidou, who had at least three contacts with Marinos Sizopoulos. Indeed, there was a communication between DIKO and EDEK presidents on this issue.
The same information adds that the presidents of the two largest parties in the intermediate space see the idea of cooperation with a positive eye and the relationships between them are very good. However, there seems to be no positive response from DIPA President Mario Karogian, while the proposal of the cooperation was rejected by the Democratic Change Movement of Dimitris Papadakis.
After Easter
As the “P” is able to know, the DIKO and EDEK consultation process to establish a single front will take on a formal form after Easter. A party official said there are some obstacles such as the lack of confidence, but stressed that the two parties have a historical responsibility to ensure the future of the intermediate space.
It is noted that the last coalition of parties in the House was in 1996 between DISY and the Nikos Rolland Liberal Party. Therefore, there are various questions about the procedural and how to achieve such cooperation. As a party official in the newspaper said, “if there is a common reading of the data and a decision on an alliance is made, then the details of the cooperation should be discussed.” For example, will there be a leader in the common ballot or will they all be with preference crosses?
However, after Easter at DIKO, visits to the provinces for ballot paper will begin and the goal is to make serious preparation before September.
EDEK
The EDEK prevails that the polls have been wronging the party over time and the percentages in the ballot box have always been higher. However, they know that conditions today are extremely unfavorable for traditional parties and does not fit into complacency. Hence the positive predisposition to DIKO’s call for alliance.
The procedures for the parliamentary elections are at a very initial stage and, as we are informed, the EDEK ballot will be 50% ready in the summer and 100% in October.
Interest is increased by the fact that two of the three members of the party will not re -establish a parliamentary seat due to the exhaustion of the two terms threshold. The parliamentary seat will not be claimed by EDEK President Marinos Sizopoulos and Pafos MP Elias Mirianthos. MP Larnaca Andreas Apostolou will not only re -establish the seat but is considered one of the big favorites of the party, since in the 2024 European elections he received the most votes on the EDEK ballot (8,438), almost twice as high as the second in crosses.
Early reports indicate that Elias Mirianthus’ parliamentary headquarters will be claimed by EDEK District Chairman Pafos Vassos Dimitriou and the municipal councilor of the party in the municipality of Paphos Panagiotis Vorkas. In Limassol, it is expected that Nikos Anastasiou will claim the seat, who received 3,321 votes in the 2024 European elections. The current headquarters of Nicosia will be claimed by the current director of EDEK Morfakis Solomonidis, a member of the Political Bureau Marios Hannidis and the President of the Youth Pampos Christodoulou. Indeed, some within EDEK believe that the Nicosia winner will also take the lead for the party’s presidency, after Marinos Sizopoulos will leave the leadership of the faction after the parliamentary elections.
DIPA
With a negative lens they see in the DIPA the idea of a common ballot paper of the intermediate parties. However, they are working on a co -operation formula in the House between the parties in the democratic arc, which will include the two major AKEL and DISY parties, on the basis of five common proposals on key social issues. “The goal of such a cooperation,” a party official said, “is to address the advance of ELAM, in order to put the parliamentary far -right in political isolation.”
Regarding the effort for a joint ballot paper of the intermediate parties, a source within the party told PIPA that the political positions of DIPA are different from the intermediate parties. He was example for the position of DIPA to restart the negotiations from where they stopped in Cran Montana. He also emphasized the party’s position to strengthen the confidence building measures that the party has supported since 2021, when the intermediate parties had a different stop in the Cyprus issue. “DIPA, DIKO and EDEK,” he added, “are not a government but support the Christodoulides government”, thus rejecting the perception of the three parties on a common path because of the government’s participation.
At this time, DIPA is in a pre -conference dialogue phase and is preparing for the political conference that will take place at the end of May. It will then enter a period of preparation for the 2026 parliamentary elections and, as the party official told PIPA, set the goal of preparing at least ¾ of the parliamentary ballot by September. The purpose of the party is to announce the candidates as early as possible, so that they can prevent a pre -election campaign in a satisfactory manner. In the DIPA they believe that the 2026 parliamentary elections are a survival battle for the party and the minimum goal is to maintain the four parliamentary seats (2 Nicosia, 1 Limassol, 1 Famagusta).
Ecologic movement
It seems very remote to be the scenario of the cooperation of the Ecologists Movement with the parties of the intermediary in the parliamentary elections.
As he told the “P” senior executive of the movement, the party never considered it to be part of what is called the intermediate space. In fact, he emphasized the fact that the parties of the intermediate space (DIKO, EDEK, DIPA) are a coalition, while the Ecologists Movement is not involved in the government and therefore there can be no joint election campaign, which will reasonably aim to promote the government.
Consequently, the Ecologists Movement will be submitted autonomously to the parliamentary elections, unless the new collective bodies that will arise at today’s electoral conference decide differently. However, there are some unconfirmed information that some executives of the Ecologists Movement want to make contact with Odysseus Michaelides.
PEAK
PA reports that DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos took the initiative to cooperate with the Democratic Change Movement ADMI in the 2026 parliamentary elections. Nikola Papadopoulos’ proposal was examined by the members of the Central Council of ACHMI, which they decided to do.
Concerning the scenario of cooperation with the Ecologists-Citizens’ Movement, a member of the Central Council told P that the debate was finally ended. He noted that this would only be possible if the two political schemes were united to create a new political party with another name and logo. “The members of the ADMISM,” he added, “do not want to only become members of the Ecologists Movement-Citizens’ Association.”
The Central Council of ARGEM recently met and concluded that it should not work with any of the traditional parties in the face of parliamentary elections, but, if possible, to engage in an anti-systemic initiative to create a new political party. Unconfirmed reports indicate that some executives of ACHMI have contacts with Odysseas Michaelides. However, a source within the Central Council told P that there is no contact with Odysseus Michaelides and that ACMI is not part of the former general auditor’s initiative to create a political platform for parliamentary elections.
Volt goes autonomously to parliamentary
The Volt is determined to fight the battle of the parliamentary elections, which is encouraged by the results of the latest polls, which show that the party has a serious chance of entering the House and electing at least two MPs. However, they acknowledge that the stakes of the parliamentary elections is existential, as a bad result will seriously risk the party’s political survival.
Volt is in the process of completing the party structure. Elections were held yesterday for the provincial committees, and the processing process of the ballots has already begun. The party has called for members interested in being included in the Volt ballot to submit interest and if interested parties are more than the number of seats available, intra -party elections will be held.
Volt’s senior executive told P that they aim to draw ballots that will host faces from all social strata and geographically cover Cyprus. He pointed out that party membership is not a prerequisite for a Volt candidate in the parliamentary elections. It is certain that the Virgin Alexandra Atalidou will re -establish a seat, and it is not excluded that Volt’s ballots will include senior executives and some of the party candidates in the European elections.
