At the center is the female figure and the contrast of the naked next to the partially covered body.
Andreana Campanella’s latest solo exhibition, entitled “Folds”, is presented at the Garage Gallery in Nicosia, from April 4 to April 12, 2025.
The central theme is the naked dialogue with the semicolon body. The female figure monopolizes the series that make up this last cycle of work. The main suggestion of the presentation, which is tired of watercolors and ink on paper, is framed by large charcoal designs on canvas and small crates worked in acrylic colors.
Inspiration were three main themes, around which the works presented were developed.
Tanagra: These are these tiny daughters of Biotia (4th and 5th BC) who are exposed to the showcases of various museums -Metropolitan and not only -the world. Wrapped in their pink and light blue, still but with a restrained, graceful attitude that gives the feeling of vibrant and elegant movement.
Young girls of today: The figures are found in a non -defined area. They are ready to cross the threshold of adulthood, leaving behind the girl … Some of them are wrapped in a simple piece of fabric, which, as an invented allegory, symbolizes the roles that appear on the road that opens in front of them, through the social condition, in whatever.
Mom and infant: A peculiar relationship created through a role – perhaps the most decisive – this motherhood.
Interesting, from an artistic point of view, focuses on the contrast of the naked next to the partially covered body. That is, the way, in which the light behaves, on the smooth tumors of the skin and how it changes to intensity, as it falls on the folds of a fabric that embraces the body.
The aesthetic and sculptural quality of the folded clothing creates a “mystery” through the play of the visible with the hidden, the presence and absence.
Chiaroscu, light and shadow, that is, created by fabric folds – deeper or superficial – become the artistic medium to indicate the contradiction of static and potential.
Finally, at a metaphorical level, the naked is parallel to the unmistakable/physical state of man, while the folded clothing becomes symbols of a processed, acquired “nature” that develops
through the social context of a time. The roles we endure become the folds of ourselves and a “second” nature.
A few words about Andreana Campanella
Andreana Campanella was born in Nicosia in 1972, where she lives and works. He studied at the School of Fine Arts, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the Department of Painting, with Professor Vangelis Dimitreas. He attended the Postgraduate Program “Aesthetics/ Philosophy of Art” at the same University in Philosophy.
