Mehmet Pechlivan, a lawyer representing Imamoglu in his investigation, was arrested “with constructed charges,” Chp MP Turan Taskin Ozer said.

The Turkish authorities released the lawyer of the prisoner of Mayor Constantinople, Ekrem Iimoglou, the main political opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after holding him for one night, according to his lawyer.

Imamoglu, of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), precedes Erdogan in some polls. He was in custody on the charge of corruption, a decision that led to the biggest anti -government demonstrations of the last decade and mass arrests throughout Turkey.

Mehmet Pechlivan, a lawyer representing Imamoglou in his investigation, was arrested “with constructed charges,” Chp MP Turan Taskin Ozer said in a post on the X platform, with no other clarifications.

Pechlivan’s lawyer, Gigit Giocsehan Kotsoglu, said his client was not arrested “because he did something, but simply because he was a lawyer for Mayor Ekrem and advocating him”, noting that his detention was a “warning”.

According to Kotsoglou, Pechlivan was asked in questioning about a transfer of money he did not make, as well as a donation to a charity. He was released, but he was banned from leaving the country. Kotsoglou said he would appeal.

Imamoglu had called for the immediate release of his lawyer. “As if the coup did not arrive in the Republic, they cannot tolerate that the victims of this coup defend themselves,” he said.
