According to data, Sweden has 64,000 political defense shelters – more than almost any other country in the world

Sweden, where authorities have warned that the country should be prepared for the risk of war, has announced an investment of 100 million crones (about 10m euros) for inspection and renovation of political defense shelters.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the uncertainty resulting from US President Donald Trump’s uncertain commitment to NATO, Sweden and many other European countries have increased national defense spending, according to foreign media.

According to data, Sweden has 64,000 political defense shelters – more than almost any other country in the world – with the ability to accommodate about seven million people.

Since Sweden joined NATO in March 2024, the Emergency Political Authority (MSB) has increased shelters’ inspections, some of which are large enough to house thousands of people.
