AKEL member of parliament Irini Charalambidou submitted two law proposals to the Parliamentary Legal Committee, with the aim of strengthening control procedures in corruption cases and cooperation between the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority and the Tax Commissioner.
The first proposal provides for an amendment to the law governing the establishment and operation of the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority, so that in cases where findings of possible involvement of an official in corruption offenses arise in its conclusion, the Tax Commissioner is informed to carry out a tax audit, based on the current legislation.
The second proposal concerns the amendment of the Income Tax Law, in order to enable the Tax Commissioner to proceed with a tax audit when he is informed by the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority of findings that include indications of the involvement of officials in corruption cases.
According to a statement issued by the AKEL member of parliament, the two proposals aim at the institutional regulation of the exchange of information and the activation of tax audits in cases where relevant findings arise, regardless of the criminal proceedings that may be ongoing.
