Sweden is plagued by gang violence for over a decade.
Swedish police should be able to use real -time face recognition software with artificial intelligence technology to combat crime, the Swedish government has proposed today as it is looking for new tools to face a wave of violent crimes that has been shocking the Scandinavian country.
The proposed law will allow the police to use artificial intelligence technology to identify or recognize people associated with serious crimes, such as people’s trafficking, abductions and murders.
“In order to tackle gang crime and restore security to society, the Police must have access to effective tools,” Justice Minister Gunnar Stemer said in a statement.
Sweden has been plagued by gang violence for over a decade and has long recorded the highest per capita percentage of fatal violence in the EU in 2023, in the last year for which comparable statistics have.
This phenomenon overshadows the rest of the Swedish political scene, leading the rise to the power of a government coalition with the support of the far -right.
This new government figure, in power by 2022, has ended in eight years of the governance of the Social Democrats, Sweden’s dominant political party since the 1930s.
The government stressed that the new law, which is to be put forward in parliament and will enter into force in early 2026, if approved, will comply with the laws on personal integrity and would be used only in matters of particular importance.
