Imamoglou, considered Erdogan’s strongest political opponent, was arrested along with about 100 of his associates in the context of a large Turkish authorities’ operation.

Protest march was scheduled for Friday night in occupied Nicosia, in solidarity with Mayor Constantinople Ekrem Imoglou. Imamoglou, considered Erdogan’s strongest political opponent, was arrested along with about 100 of his associates in the context of a large Turkish authorities’ operation.

The march takes place at a time when reactions to the Imamoglu case continue in the Turkish Cypriot community. The president of the United Cyprus Party (KEK), Izet Izan, in a statement, described the arrest of Imamoglou and other “unacceptable” executives, expressing his support in the “struggle for a secular and democratic Turkey”.

Earlier, the People’s Party (CC) expressed its concern about political developments in Turkey, stressing the need for events to be addressed on the basis of the rule of law, democracy and respect for human rights. The party also pointed out the importance of independence and the impartiality of justice.

It is recalled that the Secretary General of the Republican Turkish Party (PTK), Asim Akhanoi, had described the events in Turkey “completely contrary to democracy and human values”.

For his part, the Chairman of the Community Republic (CCP), Zeki Zeler, said that Mr Imoglou’s arrest contradicted Turkey’s recent efforts to peace initiatives.

The Road of Independence also expressed its concern, describing the operation as a “coup attempt” against the will of the Turkish people and especially the inhabitants of Constantinople.
