The Electricity Market Association (SAE) says that the energy market needs continuity, consistency and stability and calls on all competent bodies to demonstrate the required institutional seriousness and a sense of responsibility in this critical phase for the energy course of Cyprus.
In a statement, on the occasion of the statements of the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou, regarding the upcoming start of the competitive electricity market, which is expected to be implemented on October 1, 2025, SAE reports that “any early biased markets or rates of rates. Energy reforms, not only does it do not respond to reality, but it disorients public opinion and weakens the prospects for a healthy and sustainable energy market that will have significant benefits for end consumers. “
The SAE considers the statements of the Minister of Energy “particularly alarming”, noting that “less than 4 months before the start of AEA, instead of emitting stability messages to the market, Mr. Papanastasiou chooses to reinstate his personal preference for a different model (that of his own) substantiated scientific studies and consultations with EU institutions. “
“It should be understood that even personal opinions when expressed at a higher political level, have weight and have negative consequences,” he says.
As he adds, “in a period where hundreds of millions of euros have been invested by dozens of market bodies to implement the required infrastructure, these statements not only do not enhance confidence, but cultivate investment insecurity, causing unnecessary uncertainty that may have serious energy.”
