Heavy winds forced the fleece to Gaza carrying humanitarian aid and hundreds of Philopalaistine activists, including activist Greta Tumberg, to return to Barcelona, the organizers said on Monday.
About 20 ships sailed from the Spanish city on Sunday with the aim of “opening a humanitarian corridor and ending the continued genocide of the Palestinian people” in the midst of the Israeli-Hamas war, the Sumud world fleet said.
“Due to unsafe weather conditions, we carried out a maritime test and then returned to the port to pass the storm,” the organization said in a statement, without specifying when the ships returned to Barcelona.
“This meant that we had to delay our departure in order to avoid the risk of complications with smaller boats,” he added, citing wind gusts that exceeded 55 kilometers per hour.
“We have made this decision to prioritize the security and well -being of all participants and to ensure the success of our mission,” the organization said.
Spanish media reported that organizers will meet late Monday to decide whether to continue the mission.
Among the activists from dozens of countries were Tojberg, actors Liam Cunningham from Ireland and Edward Fernandez from Spain, as well as European MPs and public figures, including former Barcelona mayor Ada Kolaou.
The flutter was expected to arrive in Gaza in mid -September.
