The European Commission may not be “hidden behind the excuse that parliament needs a lot of time to make decisions,” said Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola.

Ursula von der Laienne is accused by Roberta Metsola, saying that the Commission’s president of bypassing the European Parliament’s procedures.

The European Commission cannot “be hidden behind the excuse that parliament needs a lot of time to make decisions,” Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola told reporters after meeting with EU leaders.

Mrs Metsola referred to the process of rapid approval used by von der Laieni that would provide Member States loans of 150 billion euros for defense, bypassing the European Parliament’s supervisory rights, as stated by Politico.

“Why look for a solution that bypasses your best ally on this subject, where the majorities are clear? Can I tell you that this is a point that they unanimously share, something rare of all political groups in parliament,” he said.

Metsola argued that parliament has gone through a series of reforms to ensure that quick decisions could be made and gave several examples of recent files, such as the ammunition and production bill, which “took us six weeks”.

“I look at this with a sense of realism, understanding the urgent need, but also saying that we remain firm in our positions,” he added.
