Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused European leaders on Wednesday of “clumsy efforts” to change US President Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine.
“We only saw aggressive escalation and quite clumsy efforts to change the position of US president,” he said, referring to Monday’s meeting between Trump, European leaders and Volodimir Zelenski.
“We didn’t hear any constructive idea on the European side,” he added.
At the same time, Sergei Lavrov said Russia is in favor of credible security guarantees for Ukraine, but hopes the United States understands that the debate on security without Russia is “a road that is not leading anywhere”.
“I am sure that in the West – and especially in the United States – they understand very well that discussing serious security issues without Russia is a utopia; it is a road to nowhere.”
The US has an increasingly clear understanding of the “main causes” of the crisis in Ukraine, Lavrov added.
“Russia is ready to discuss the political aspects of settlement with Ukraine,” he said.
