Europe’s strategic autonomy cannot be built at the expense of national interests of Member States

The position that there can be no cooperation with Turkey unless there is real progress on the Cyprus issue, the leaders of the European People’s Party, with DISY President Annita Dimitriou focusing on the letter of the heads of European institutions to the Secretary -General of the UN.

DISY, through Annita Dimitriou, expressed in the EPP that Europe’s strategic autonomy cannot be built at the expense of national interests of Member States.

Annita Dimitriou’s statement:

At the EPP leaders, we have informed our European partners about developments in the Cyprus issue, what was decided at the Geneva Conference and the prospects of the process.

In this context, the letter of the heads of European institutions was decisive and essential. We personally thanked Mrs. von der Laien for this.

The EU has clearly reaffirmed that the only viable solution to the Cyprus issue is the bi -zonal bicommunal federation based on the community acquis and European authorities. This position, which is an EPP position, sends a clear message that the EU cannot accept solutions outside this framework.

This was also included in the current common document co -signed by EPP leaders.

At the same time, special debate was made and decisions on Europe’s defense and security. Our position in the discussion is pure: We support the new European Defense and Security Policy, which is a major step towards Europe’s strategic autonomy. At the same time, we emphasize that there can be no cooperation with Turkey unless there is real progress on the Cyprus issue. The Cyprus issue is not just a national issue, but a European problem that touches the core of European security.

In our intervention, regarding the strengthening of European defense, it was secured and introduced in the document that any decisions for strategic cooperation with third countries should be taken in a way that fully respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Member States of the European Union. Europe’s strategic autonomy cannot be built at the expense of the national interests of Member States.

The democratic alarm remains fully committed to the process of resolving the Cyprus problem, to ensure our national interests within the EU, but also to maintaining balances that guarantee security and stability in the wider region.
