The Mayor of Constantinople was detained for the corruption case.
Turkish justice has decided, by satisfying the request made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, to detain the mayor of Constantinople, Ekrem Imoglou, a major opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Imamoglou was in custody for the corruption case and was rid of the terrorism case. Until his trial is held, the Mayor of Constantinople will remain in prison.
Imamoglu, who was expected to go down as a candidate in the next presidential election in Turkey, denies the accusations, which characterizes “unthinkable” “non -existent”, “immoral” and “slander”.
Tens of thousands of supporters took to the streets to protest for the fourth consecutive night last Saturday, defying the ban on the authorities.
The Mayor’s lineup, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), described the arrest as a “coup” on Wednesday morning and the accusation of Imamoglou.
The next elections have been set for 2028, but Erdogan has reached his two term of office as president, having previously served as prime minister. If he wishes to be a candidate again he must call early elections or change the Constitution.
On March 22, Erdogan, who has been governing the country for more than 22 years, accused the CHP of trying to “cause our nation”, adding that they would not tolerate vandalism.
