The first phase of the project, which was finished, will have a duration of the three years and he said, it is possible to do it.
The assessment that until next October, the construction project of the motorway connecting Paphos with the city of Chrysochous will be assigned to a contractor was expressed by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafadis. In his statements on the sidelines of the events in Paphos, on the anniversary of March 25, the minister also said that there is expected interest by Cypriot contractors because, as the project said, which will be executed in phases, it is within the framework of the possibilities of several Cypriot contractors. He added that there are already projects of the same size that are being implemented in Cyprus.
The responsible minister said the project is proceeding normally, based on the announcements of the PDD and added that the studies were completed, the process of preparing documents is ongoing and interested parties would be invited to submit bids.
The first phase of the project, which was finished, will have a duration of the three years and he said, it is possible to do it.
The project concerns the construction of a four-lane motorway with the connection of the Mesoge and the entrance- exit of Marathunda. This is, Mr Vafadis continued, for a functional road project, which is now approached as a 4 -lane motorway and not as a two -lane road, as he said. Therefore, he added, this ensures the road safety and the development of the area. Paphos, he noted, will be able to grow as the residents want and he said is the most important.
Asked if the possibility of the opening of the Kokkinis barricade negates the planning of the state, Alexis Vafadis made it clear that this project is not affected at all. He explained that this highway would connect Paphos with the wider area of Chrysochous. This is the connection, he said, noting that Paphos is the driving force for the Chrysochous city area.
Commenting on the issue of works for which public contracts had been reported, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Projects said the redesign was proceeding. Specifically, referring to the work of Marina Larnaca, he said that it has already been given credit to proceed with the deletion and renovation in the marina. The project, totaling 1.5m euros, is expected to be announced this week while the Ministry of Transport, Mr Vafadis noted, is also studying with the study of the future of development in the port and Marina Larnaca. Concluding, the minister said that every step that is being taken, it is announced, so that “the Cypriot people are aware of that we are going” and that the project “has not been left on the shelf”.
Satisfaction for positions is expressed by EOA President Paphos
For his part, the Minister of Transport’s “clear positions” regarding the important infrastructure projects in Paphos province, EOA President Pafos Charalambos Pitkopitis said.
Concerning the aqueous balance, Mr Pitkopitis said that due to the prolonged water scarcity and drought the whole of Cyprus would face a serious problem. In Paphos, however, the issues will be more serious, he said, due to the destruction of the unique desalination unit in Kouklia. However, in cooperation with the mayors of the province and the water department, we proceed with alternatives to address the situation, Mr Pitkopitis concluded.
