The Democratic Alarm has accused the former Famagusta MP of citing the party’s ideological roots of justifying personal political choices.
“The Democratic Alarm remains stable in its founding principles, with complete commitment to national dignity, transparency, good administration and unmistakable responsibility to the people, and especially the younger generation,” DISY said in a statement in response to the letter of departure.
“Our lineup,” he continues, “has never been a product of personal approaches, nor did it work with a property perception. On the contrary, it was and remains a vibrant, evolving power of democratic dialogue and national responsibility. “
“Mr. Hamboulas,” DISY adds, “speaks of” existential dilemma “and” removal from ideological roots “. We will remind him that the authorities do not abandon people; people choose whether they will remain loyal to them or rely on them to justify personal political choices. “
DISY then says that “we respect the disagreement. But we do not accept distortion. The history of the democratic alarm was written by deeds, consistently, at political costs, with national consciousness. We will not allow it to be challenged by hints that serve narratives foreign to our collective identity. “
“The struggle,” concludes, “continues, and the democratic alarm will be at the forefront, with a clear strategy, responsible speech and dedication to tomorrow’s Cyprus.”
The spikes of the hamboula
It is recalled that former Famagusta MP Eugenios Hamboulas sent a letter to Democratic Alarm President Annita Dimitriou, with whom he is leaving the party. Among other things, he says that he has long followed “the gradual removal from the ideological roots of the party – from national dignity, transparency and honesty towards the people and especially the younger generation.” He notes that he can never and will never come together “with choices and silences” that do not express it.
Mr. Hamboula’s letter:
With a deep respect for the history of our country and with a sense of responsibility for my course in political life, I announce today my departure from the democratic alarm.
Where I started, it’s no longer what I thought. I was born with the founding principles of the Democratic Alarm, I believed in responsibility, I was convinced of the need for a patriotic and at the same time modern faction. I fought, I stood present and active in easy but especially difficult. But the course of the leadership of the party in recent years brings me to a deep existential dilemma: to remain silent on something that no longer expresses me or to find myself with purity outside it?
It is not a bitterness, but an act of political responsibility to align with my consciousness. It is not a moment of reaction, but the result of long thinking and internal dialogue. I have long been watching the gradual removal from the ideological roots of the party – from national dignity, transparency and honesty towards the people and especially the younger generation. I can and will never come together with choices and silences that do not express me.
I leave with my head high, grateful for the experiences and people I met, the battles we fought when the goals were clear. Now, I firmly believe that it is time for a new political narrative, with clear lines and fixed values.
April 1 is dawning tomorrow, 70 years since the beginning of the armed national liberation, united EOKA struggle. And as then, today, history invites us to take a position. To talk, to act, not to stay spectators.
The course continues. Consequently, determination, honesty and faith in Cyprus we dream of and deserves.
