“The increase we noticed in 2024 was greater than expected,” said Josh Willis of NASA’s jet promotion laboratory in Pasandina, California.
In recent years, two -thirds of the sea level rise was due to the addition of water from melting the ice and glaciers, while about one -third was due to the thermal expansion of seawater.
In 2024, these contributions were reversed, with two -thirds of the increase coming from the thermal expansion of water.
“With 2024 being the warmest year recorded, the spreading oceans have reached their highest levels for three decades,” adds Nadia Schiffer, a natural oceanography program manager at NASA headquarters in Washington.
Since began satellite monitoring of ocean level in 1993, the annual rise rate of sea level has more than doubled: overall, the world’s world has increased by 10 cm.
