All this just a few months after complaints about pollution of the area and the war barrier
The wastewater treatment station in Vati in Limassol has been off the last 24 hours. This station is seriously damaged, so it cannot accept new quantities to be processed, with information indicating that the problem occurred within the week and no way has been found. There is some information about the type of problem but it has not been managed to confirm for the time being. The damage to the organic station was informally confirmed to the “P” by the Water Department responsible for its operation. However, despite the fact that the station has been virtually south, so far there has been no official information from the authorities.
In the area in recent days there has been an unbearable smell that has raised huge questions to those who visit it. The smell seems to come from illegal rejections in the wider area, and in particular in reeds within the former sturgeon, where safe information of “P” reports that dozens of tankers illegally empty their loads in the last 24 hours, since they cannot be able to receive it. Specifically, loads are emptied where they were emptied and before the organic station was operated. This issue appears to be in mind the responsible (illegal rejections) that monitor the matter, but embarrassed, and taking into account the high temperature of the last few days, make the situation unbearable there, and insects have already increased.
It is noted that this unit receives a waste from specific industrial units from all over Cyprus who are obliged to provide its environmental permission to deliver their waste there for processing there. It also remains unknown whether some alternative was influenced.
Painful story
It is noted that the reality in the Vati region is a painful story, since in practice the former garbage dump was never restored. The biological station that has been operating in recent years has brought some relief, but there are problems from time to time. Just a few months ago there was an official complaint by the Ecologists Movement for polluting on adjacent rivers and slowly, with all of them ending up in the war barrier used for irrigation. The complaint of the Ecologists was followed by a visit by the Parliamentary Environment Committee to the Biological Station, with Members seeing the reality closely and listening to the various problems. At that time, the Director of the Department of the Environment had also referred to a series of measures for better supervision of the area with the aim of illegal rejection.
“P”, throughout yesterday’s day, was trying to formally communicate with the Department of Water Development and the Department of Environment in order to have their own official position, which unfortunately has not yet been possible.
