For the first time in history Turkish Cypriot claims a vice -president of a Greek Cypriot community party

Thriller elections are being led by the Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation Movement next Sunday, April 6, at a critical time for the future of the party. Although the latest polls show that the movement reaches 3%, the electoral limit for entry into the House is 3.6%. This raises some concerns about whether the party will eventually maintain its parliamentary character. If it does not succeed, then the movement will lose the advantage of state sponsorships and the ability to produce legislative work. Without the sponsorship of the state, the movement will not be able to cover its operating expenses and without Members will be on the political margin.

The candidates

The presidency of the party is being claimed by Limassol MP Stavros Papadouris and the current Vice President 1 Kyriakos Tsimilis. Sotiris Christou withdrew his candidacy for the presidency, expressing his support for Stavros Papadouris. However, he claims the position of Deputy President against Maria Kolas’s candidacy, who today holds the position of Vice President II. Oz Karahanos, Loukas Stylianou, Monica Pieridou, Katerina Hadjistylis, George Constantinou and Sotiris Christou are claiming the two positions of Vice -Presidents.

The new Central Committee will also be elected at the next Sunday’s electoral conference, which will be called upon to form the Political Committee. Of course, the elections for the provincial committees have been held and therefore some members of the new Central Committee are already known.

Free of favor

Speaking to the “P” founding member of the Ecologists Movement, he described the landscape clouded, saying that “with the data so far it is completely unknown who the winner of the election will be.” It is probably the first time that there is no clear favorite and it is serious that there is a marginal effect on the ballot box.

Today’s President of the Ecologists Movement George Perdikis holds his papers hermetically closed, avoiding publicly expressing his support for one or the other, even refuting rumors that he shows preference for Kyriakos Tsimilis’ face. On the contrary, Mr Perdikis told P that they were two very remarkable nominations.

Profile

Although there is no critical dilemma in the selection of the new leadership, there are no significant differences between the two candidates of the party, which will be taken into account and may be the most basic criterion of the vote.

Kyriakos Tsimilis is a founding member of the party. He has been dealing with environmental issues for many years and has been an active member of Akamas’ friends, the Federation of Environmental Organizations and the Cyprus Nuclear Platform. That is, he is a better knowledge of environmental issues and represents the first generation of ecologists.

Indeed, it is considered the “hawk” of the Ecologists Movement in the Cyprus issue, a matter with which it is closely dealing with, expressing hard positions. It represents the movement at the National Council and the twelve -member political group for the Cyprus issue appointed by President Christodoulides. It also represents ecologists at meetings with the Turkish Cypriot parties in Ledra Palace and is the one who brought the Turkish Cypriot Oz Karahan to the party.

Stavros Papadouris joined the Ecological Movement a few years ago and is the first to win a parliamentary seat in Limassol. He is described as an active member of the House and is considered a new person in a policy that carries fresh air and has significant displacement.

The 51 -year -old Limassol MP is the party’s heavy artillery on economic issues. The movement not only recognizes his knowledge of economic issues but also his great interest in social policy. However, he does not know the Cyprus problem very well but does not have a deep knowledge of environmental issues.

The next day

Recovering the credibility of the party that has been affected by intra -party disputes and the last year’s departures is for the current president of the Movement George Perdiki the biggest stake in the new leadership.

Some other party executives told P that the biggest bet on the new leadership concerns the effort to remain a parliamentary party for the Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation Movement, electing MPs in the 2026 elections.

Another source within the party told the newspaper that the big stake in the next day is the improvement of party rates and registering new members. “For so many years,” he said, “there was no serious attempt to register new members.” He even expressed the view that there was a fear of overthrowing intra -party balances by registering new members.

Cooperation with peak

Certainly one of the big stakes of the next day will be the management of the issue of cooperation with the political team “peak” of former MEP Dimitris Papadakis.

The first attempt to unite failed due to various reactions caused and the issue was frozen. However, some members of the “peak” have been able to register with members of the movement and two of them have been elected to the provincial committees, securing a position in the new Central Committee.

So there is a great chance that the new leadership will be called upon to manage this issue and decide whether it will eventually unite the two political schemes. However, the information of P says that there is still a positive interest on both sides.

Turkish Cypriots

The electoral list closed and P.’s information indicates that about 559 members of the movement will be voted next Sunday. Members who have paid annual subscription to the party have the right to vote.

The same information says that they have been registered with the party’s register of over 50 Turkish Cypriots and efforts are being made to make various party processes for the first time. It is also historically the first time a Turkish Cypriot has been claiming a vice -president in a party of the Greek Cypriot community. It is recalled that Oz Karahan also participated in the movement’s ballot in the 2024 European elections.

Innovative methods

In this election, the Ecologists Movement will implement some innovative methods of a pre -election struggle and vote. Podcast is scheduled on April 2, where the two candidates for the presidency and the discussion will be co -ordinated by journalist Elena Georgiou.

The provinces will also be set up in the provinces to vote for movement members who are facing difficulties. In addition, a letter will be given the opportunity before the Congress and will be held online for those who cannot attend. Indeed, a member of the European Greens will take responsibility for the conduct of the online vote in order to ensure that the election is stunned. Details of procedural will be announced within the next week.
