Chinese automaker developed a battery that will allow electric vehicles to charge almost as fast as it needs to fill the tank of a regular car with gasoline.

The new battery, called e-Platform, was developed by BYD, a Chinese company that overcame Tesla as the world’s leading electric vehicles.

With a 10C rating-which means the battery can carry a ten-fold load from its rated capacity-e-Platform can reach full charge in just six minutes, Livescience reports. At the maximum 1,000 kW charging power, the battery charge rate is twice as high as Tesla’s 500 kW overloaders. This means that the two new BYD models that use the battery – the Han L Saloon and the SUV Tang L – can travel up to 400 kilometers with just five minutes of charging.

However, high currents tend to produce heat that destroys the batteries of electric vehicles. To bypass this, BYD has greatly reduced the internal resistance inside the battery. The new silicon carbide chips created by the company are also designed to withstand higher trends.

Byd said it will install a network of 4,000 rapid charging stations across China. This technology is currently available only there, and the company has not yet confirmed whether it will allocate it internationally.
