The Hungarian government will not support the new seven -year EU budget unless Brussels releases all European funds that have been “frozen”, Prime Minister Victor Orban said today.
For the last 15 years, the nationalist leader has clashed with Brussels for his policies in immigration, the restriction of the rights of the LGBTKI community and the declining democracy, according to critics, in Hungary. The EU has suspended billions of euros in funds intended for Hungary, while the rule of law continues.
“The approval of the new seven -year budget requires unanimity and until we receive the remaining (frozen) funds, there will be not a new EU budget,” Orban said during a speech at a university in the Romanian city of Bile.
He also criticized the EU for supporting Ukraine and accused Brussels of planning to establish a “pro-Turkish and in favor of Brussels government” in Hungary in the next year’s national elections.
According to him, the current EU leadership has put the Union on a road that will lead to a trade war that Europe “cannot win”.
“The current EU leadership will always be the last to sign agreements with the US and always the worst agreements,” Orban added, urgently seeking to change the block of the bloc.
European Commission President Ursula von der Laien will meet US President Donald Trump tomorrow in Scotland, after European officials and diplomats have said they were expecting a framework for a commercial agreement this weekend.
The European Commission has earlier proposed this month a budget for the EU EUR 2 trillion for the period 2028-2034, with an emphasis on economic competitiveness and defense.
In addition, Orban said that the “advocates of globalization bureaucrats” are conspiring to channel Europe’s money to Ukraine “while” our farmers are rising to defend their future “.
