SIGMA poll: AKEL is marginally first, Amesi Demokratia in sixth place

AKEL is the first party with a percentage of 18% in the poll conducted by Prime Consulting Ltd on behalf of the TV channel SIGMA, with DISY in second place with a percentage of 17.5%, ELAM third with 12%, ALMA fourth with 10%, DIKO fifth with 7% and Direct Democracy in sixth place with 6.5%. The electoral threshold of 3.6% for entering the Parliament is not exceeded by the parties VOLT (2%), EDEK (2%), Movement of Environmentalists-Citizens Cooperation (1%) and DIPA (1%). 14.5% of the participants in the opinion survey said they were undecided, while 7.5% did not give an answer to the question about the intention to vote. All the above percentages refer to the intention to vote in the valid ones, i.e. subtracting the abstention which reached 4%.

Party gatherings

AKEL shows the highest rally with 72%, followed by ELAM with 67%. DISY’s support reaches 53%, DIKO’s 51%, EDEK’s 34%, the Environmental Movement’s 24% and DIPA’s 22%.

Undecided

The results of the survey on how those who declare themselves undecided voted in the 2021 parliamentary elections are of interest. 27% voted for DISY, 13% for AKEL, 6% for EDEK, 5% for DIPA, 4% for the Environmental Movement, 2% for ELAM and 1% for DIKO.

Outflows to ALMA and Direct Democracy

The research shows the party origin of the voters who today declare that they will vote for the ALMA party. The largest percentage, reaching 14%, comes from DIKO, while the outflows from DISY and AKEL to ALMA reach 12%. It is followed by EDEK with 11%, the Environmental Movement with 9% and ELAM with 3%.

The largest outflows of voters towards the Direct Democracy are recorded among DISY voters with the percentage being 14%. The outflows from DIKO and ELAM are 11% and from AKEL 9%. The corresponding percentage in EDEK and the Environmental Movement reaches 2%.

Voting certainty

Only six out of ten are absolutely/somewhat sure about how they will vote in the parliamentary elections in May (59%), while 35% say not so/not at all sure.

Also, 41% said that in the upcoming parliamentary elections they will vote to reward a party, while 21% said they will go to the polls to protest the party system as a whole. 7% will vote to disapprove of a party.

Of the undecideds, 32% said they would vote to reward a party, 28% to protest the party system as a whole, and 10% to disapprove of a party.

Also, only 52% state that there is a party that expresses this to a large extent.

When asked what bothers them most about the way the parties operate, 34% mention hypocrisy, 15% populism and 14% clientelism/rubbery.

Fighting corruption

When asked about the direction of the country in each area, the participants answer that we are in the wrong direction in terms of fighting corruption with a percentage that reaches 85%. According to 76%, the country is in the wrong direction in terms of fighting crime, while 75% consider the functioning of the institutions to be wrong. 64% state that the country is in the wrong direction on the Cyprus issue as well. Only international orientation and employment/unemployment receive a higher percentage of positive responses with 57% and 52% respectively.

Negative vote in PtD

57% of the survey participants expressed a negative opinion of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, while 33% expressed a positive opinion. Also, 72% answered “not very/not at all satisfied” with the overall work of the President of the Republic, with 27% declaring “very/quite” satisfied.

Opinion on political leaders

The leader of the ALMA party, Odysseas Michailidis, ranks first in terms of positive opinion rates for political leaders with 39%. In second place is the president of DISY, Annita Dimitriou, with 37%, followed by C.G. of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou with 35%, the president of the Environmental Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation Stavros Papadouris with 27%, the president of ELAM Christos Christou with 25% and the president of DIKO Nikolas Papadopoulos with 18%. In seventh place is MEP Phidias Panagiotou with 17%, while the president of DIPA Marios Karoyan and the president of EDEK Nikos Anastasiou jointly receive 12%. The positive opinion for Volt co-presidents Andromachis Sofokleous and Panos Parras is 10% and 7% respectively.

Phidias Panagiotou ranks first in a negative opinion with 76%, followed by Marios Karoyan with 72%, Nikolas Papadopoulos with 66%, Christos Christou with 61%, Annita Dimitriou and Stefanos Stefanou who together receive 49% and Nikos Anastasiou with 43%. The negative opinion for Odysseas Michaelidis reaches 42%, followed by Stavros Papadouris with 38%, Andromachi Sophokleous with 33% and Panos Parras with 32%.

Parliament

73% say they are “not so/not at all” satisfied with the work of the Parliament, while 25% are “very/quite” satisfied.

In the question about the most important issue with which the new Parliament should deal, 35% say the fight against corruption, while the limitation of accuracy and immigration reach 16%. It is followed by the Cyprus issue with 7%, the economy with 5%, the control of bank practices with 4% and housing with 3%.

Feeling about Politics

Disappointment is the dominant emotion for politics at 58%. In second place with 14% is uncertainty and in third place is the feeling of anger with 12%.

Research ID

The opinion survey was carried out at a Cypriot level with random stratified sampling. It was conducted between February 6 and 14, and 1,000 interviews were conducted with eligible voters aged 18 and over. The statistical error range is +/- 3%.
