Another loss of points for Arsenal, who failed to “lock” the double. After the draw against Brentford, Mikel Arteta’s side wanted victory at all costs against the bottom of the Premier League, but in the end they “paid” for their inability to finish the match.
The Gunners looked to be doing the job at Molineux, but were held to a 2-2 draw by Wolves in a matchday 31 clash that was brought forward due to Arsenal’s participation in the Carabao Cup final (March 22).
The visitors’ lead came early on as Declan Rice curled in a superb cross and Bukayo Saka’s close range header made it 0-1 in just the 5th minute. It was the England winger’s first goal since December 3, ending a 15-game goalless streak.
In the second half, Arsenal laid a solid foundation for victory when Gabriel set up Piero Incapier, who scored in the 56th minute. Initially the assistant indicated offside, but the VAR confirmed that the goal was legal and 0-2 counted.
Wolves, however, responded immediately. Hugo Bueno with a beautiful deflected shot in the 61st minute reduced it to 1-2, putting the game on fire again.
And while everything seemed that Arsenal would leave with the three points, the “coolness” came in the 94th minute. In a period of time in their frames, the ball ended up in the net after an unfortunate intervention by Riccardo Calafiori, who scored an own goal, making the final 2-2 and denying the Londoners two valuable points in the battle for the top.
Arsenal are now +5 ahead of Manchester City, but with a game in hand…
