A scene of extreme polarization prevails within the Republican People’s Party CHP in Turkey, following the court decision deposing official opposition leader Ozgur Ozel.
As his correspondent broadcasts from Istanbul ERTnewsElvira Kritharis, this case goes back to 2023 and the congress of the party that had elected Ozel as leader against Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
Yesterday’s decision deposes Ozel and brings to the leadership of the official opposition party, Kilicdaroglu, former president of the party for 13 years.
Of course, the Ozel side has the right to appeal, so it remains to be seen what the developments will be in this tense scene of tension within the Republican Party.
There were very large demonstrations yesterday, with crowds gathering at the party’s offices, especially in Ankara, where Ozel gave a public speech. He refused to talk to Kilicdaroglu by phone. All scenarios are open, he said, for the next day of the party, while the possibility of early elections is already being discussed, now that the official opposition party is weakened.
On Friday morning, the CHP blocked the entrance with two buses to prevent the Police from breaking into the party’s headquarters.
One dead from floods
At the same time, Turkey is counting its wounds from the devastating floods and landslides that are sweeping the country in the province of Antioch.
Shops, roads and farmland were flooded, while schools were closed due to the severe weather.
There is one confirmed dead person, while the rescuers managed to free at least three people alive from the rapids.
