Visa (NYSE: V) today announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to enable secure payments with Visa in agentic commerce, enabling seamless and trusted transactions across all OpenAI platforms. The companies jointly presented the partnership at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco. As part of this, Visa will provide its global network, card payment management capabilities and security infrastructure to support agentic commerce experiences, helping consumers and businesses interact and transact with security and confidence.
The partnership is part of the broader Visa Intelligent Commerce initiative, which focuses on extending secure payment capabilities to new digital environments. Together, Visa and OpenAI will also explore a range of business applications, including Codex-supported developer experiences, as well as more automated and interactive workflows, as AI continues to evolve into a key interface for digital interactions.
As part of the partnership, Visa’s payment capabilities will be integrated into OpenAI’s experiences, providing developers and merchants with a simplified way to accept agent-initiated Visa payments. Working with OpenAI, Visa will provide the underlying network, tokenization technology and risk management capabilities that support trusted and secure transactions.
Transactions will occur within clearly defined user rights, policies and controls, such as spending limits, merchant categories or required approvals. Transactions will use tokenized Visa cards, as well as real-time authorization checking and fraud detection, helping new AI-powered payment experiences maintain high levels of consumer security and protection.
“Artificial Intelligence will transform commerce more profoundly than the internet or mobile technology,” said Sevi Vassileva, General Manager for Greece, Cyprus, Malta and Israel at Visa. “As AI agents actively participate in the economy, Visa’s priority is to ensure that transactions are reliable, secure and seamless. That’s the infrastructure we’re building with partners like OpenAI.”
“Commerce will take place in many more places and in many more ways than today, and agents will play an increasingly important role in helping people complete tasks that involve money – from shopping and payments to more complex transactions,” said Marco Mahrus, Head of Partnerships, Commerce in OpenAI. “By integrating with Visa Intelligent Commerce, we are creating the infrastructure for secure, transparent and user-controlled agentic transactions, helping people do more through AI agents while maintaining confidence that payments are processed securely and reliably.”
