Problems in the operation of the warning system were recorded during today’s activation of the sirens, on the day of the coup, as the intended sound signal was not heard in areas of Paphos and Nicosia province.

The press representative of the Civil Defense, Panagiotis Liasidis, reported on the show “Alpha News” that all the necessary preparations had been made, based on the prescribed procedures. He admitted, however, that there were problems, which are to be investigated.

Among the complaints recorded was a report from Dali, with the local mayor noting that the sirens did not sound. Similar complaints were also made from areas of Paphos.

“All cases will be examined. The issue is being evaluated and a study is being done to replace the system. We are monitoring the matter and measures will be taken”, said Mr. Liasidis.

The Civil Defense spokesperson noted that it is still too early to form a comprehensive picture of the number of sirens that did not work, as well as the extent of the affected areas.

About 157 sirens throughout Cyprus

According to Mr. Liasidis, approximately 157 sirens are currently installed throughout Cyprus. Coverage is mainly concentrated in urban centres, while sirens have also been installed in some communities.

At the same time, he admitted that there are geographical areas which are not sufficiently covered by the existing system.

As he explained, a study is underway to upgrade and replace the system, with the aim of improving coverage in areas where there are currently no sirens.
