The first case of the Ebola virus detected on French soil, a doctor who had returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has recovered and been discharged, the country’s Minister of Health, Stephanie Rist, announced today, according to a press release sent to Agence France-Presse.
This doctor who offered humanitarian work and arrived in France on June 23 coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – a country that is currently facing a large epidemic of the virus, “came out today from the health care institution where he was treated”, added the Minister. After two negative PCR tests, the patient has now recovered and was able to return home safely, she explained.
The doctor, who works for the humanitarian NGO Alima, had boarded a flight from Kinshasa with no symptoms other than headaches, but his condition worsened slightly during the journey. The patient had been isolated on arrival at the Paris airport and was then taken to hospital to be placed in isolation.
Remaining largely asymptomatic, the patient received medical treatment and was strictly monitored, in full compliance with health protocols, the minister added, highlighting “the excellence of our system of surveillance, isolation and response to emergency health risks”.
