The Attorney General of the Republic, George L. Savvidis, opens his papers in a comprehensive interview on the ERA Talks series podcast, talking about the functioning of the judiciary in Cyprus, the ongoing reforms, the role of the Legal Service in the fight against corruption, the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights concerning Cyprus, as well as the challenges the country faces in the European and international legal environment. At the same time, it refers to the contribution of the Legal Service during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, but also to the importance of international law and the European legal order for the Cyprus issue.
The discussion analyzes the role of the Legal Service in the modern rule of law, while special reference is made to the separation of the responsibilities of the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General, a reform that is considered of key importance for further strengthening the independence and efficiency of the Judiciary.
