The ballot box is connected to the truths of life

A poll is a snapshot of the moment, says the political dictionary. And so it is not difficult to predict some percentages of the parties for May 24, 2026 on the basis of the relevant measurements. However, one should not ignore that before us we have a completely different party landscape where new party formations are also appearing. Consequently, we also have an electorate whose DNA is largely untraceable today. That is why it is very likely that when the polls open we will have surprises similar to that of Phidias Panagiotou in the European elections. And this is because a percentage of the order of 18%-20% states that they may change their mind. That is, if a percentage of the order of +5% or even +7% falls in the ballot box of a specific faction and raises it -unpredictably- to the 1st or 2nd place, then there will be talk of surprise. But will it be a surprise? ANT1 on Wednesday night showed that DISY’s rallying remains low (57%) and recorded vote outflows towards ELAM (10%), ALMA and Direct Democracy (4%), while 12% of DISY voters declared themselves undecided. On the other hand, AKEL, which registers the highest rally (74%), has outflows to the Direct Democracy 6%, while to ALMA and the Volt at 3%. ELAM has outflows of 13% to DISY and 4% to Direct Democracy. DIKO has outflows to ALMA of the order of 9%, 7% to AKEL and 6% to ELAM. So who is the one who can make a composed prediction, when the research companies, in order to get a sample of the 1,000 voters who answer their questions, have to make more than 12,000 phone calls?

The other extremely interesting issue that emerges, from what we see from the channels, is that the conventional party structures are still unable to use a different tool to communicate with society than the wooden language that they themselves “invented” and imposed on political life. But a language that the younger generations not only consider a foreign body but also detest. At the meeting of political leaders at Omega it was clear that DISY, AKEL, ELAM, DIKO and ALMA were using a different communication tool with the television audience than that of Direct Democracy. When Phidias says that he does not know the Cyprus issue or cannot know the EU budget, why do the party leaders characterize him as politically uneducated? Why did the educated and political scientists not manage to find a solution in these 52 years? Why did 76% vote “no” in the referendum in 2004, rejecting the return of Famagusta, Morphou and 52 occupied villages and the withdrawal of the last Turkish soldier in 2019? Because 76% had read the Annan Plan and concluded that the Turkish Cypriots would laugh at us, or maybe because we did not want to share with them the CD, a member of the EU?

Because today the president of DIKO, Nikolas Papadopoulos, is challenging Odysseus Michaelidis from ALMA to tell us now, on the 22nd anniversary of the referendum, his opinion on Tassos Papadopoulos’ stance on the Annan Plan. To tell us if she was correct, dignified and proud, as he himself believes. A centrist, says Nikolas Papadopoulos (“F”, 03/05/2026), “can answer this question in a few seconds. But instead of a clear answer, for a week now we have been receiving arrogance, poetry and academic chatter from ALMA”. Can Mr. Nikolas Papadopoulos, in a few seconds or even more time, tell us if the attitude of Tassos Papadopoulos was correct, dignified and proud in the Milosevic scandal in which together with Kiki Lazaridis and Auxentis Auxentiou they “treated” the billions of the people of Yugoslavia without compensation? Is the pre-election campaign being done with witticisms, Mr. President of DIKO? It is not possible and the ballot will show it on the last Sunday of May.

Because the ballot box is connected to the truths of life and not to convenient fairy tales on which the leaders build their castles who are comfortable with “heroism” and memorial speeches and heirs of party offices who maintain a status quo for the few and a “right” of a need tailored exclusively to their needs. We will see you next Sunday with the truths of the ballot box.
